Period week, minus the extra admin.

Hey babe,

You know that version of you who reckons she’ll cook from scratch, answer every message and breeze through period week? Love her confidence. This month’s plan is for the other version. The one on the couch, negotiating with a pair of trackies.

The useful bit: make a plan that fits a low-energy day.

A plan you can do while feeling average is more useful than one that needs a whole new personality. Pick one small job from each column of your life: food, comfort, and asking for help. You can stop at one.

  • Food: choose your emergency dinner now. Put the ingredients where you can see them.
  • Comfort: find your heat pack and its cover. Check the instructions rather than guessing how long it goes in the microwave.
  • Support: ask someone to take one job. “Can you sort dinner tonight?” is a complete request.

Your two-minute job.

Open a note called “next period, less admin”. Add: one meal, one person you can ask, and the symptom you want to mention at your next appointment. That’s it. Don’t turn the note into a spreadsheet unless spreadsheets genuinely bring you joy.

The can’t-be-arsed dinner: beans on toast, with a bit of dignity.

You’ll need: half a tin of beans, two slices of bread, a tomato and whatever seasoning you like. Adjust the amount to your appetite. Choose ingredients that suit your allergies and gut.

  1. Heat the beans according to the tin until steaming hot.
  2. Toast the bread. Chop the tomato, or use ready-chopped if today is that day.
  3. Put it together and eat it sitting down if you can. Refrigerate leftover beans promptly in a covered container and follow the label.

This is a dinner idea. It is not a treatment, a detox or a way to “balance” your hormones.

The bit we won’t brush off.

Periods that stop you doing everyday things deserve medical attention. If bleeding suddenly becomes much heavier than usual, particularly with dizziness or weakness, seek urgent care. You don’t have to wait for next month’s letter.

Until next month,
